Ma Nishtana: What makes this night different
Today, inspired by Birkat HaHammah, let us ask:
What makes this Birkat HaHammah different than all other celebrations of Birkat HaHammah?
All other years, we marveled at the general wonders of the Sun, but this year we are focusing on its endless, renewable source of energy and life.
All other years, this holiday had gone virtually unnoticed, but this year, there are countless celebrations taking place across the globe.
All other years, we left the lights on after we left rooms, but this year we shut off lights, switch light bulbs and conduct energy audits.
All other years, we spent energy focusing on what we didn’t have, but this year, we are trying to focus on what we don’t need.
Activity:
In groups, develop a narrative that begins to answer these questions. There may be facts and figures you want to include, but focus on a story we can tell our children 28 years from today, when they ask: What does Birkat HaHammah mean to you?

Some people say children’s questions should always be answered immediately and fully. But every child knows that doesn’t always happen… And surely, God doesn’t always respond to questions right away – or at least, in the way we expect.
The Haggadah, too, responds to the Four Puzzlements in a puzzling way. It doesn’t talk about chametz and matzah, or about maror; those responses come later, just before the meal, in Rabban Gamliel’s story. And it doesn’t explain dipping or reclining at all – except, as with all questions, by telling the story of the Exodus.
